Ion 1950's Futuristic Flying Wing - Pt15: Fuel Tank Problem!! - By O.F.W. (Peter) Fisher
The Ion Mk 20 is a great looking flying wing from 1957, designed by O.F.W. Fisher and English designer and owner of Performance Kits. He was often known as Peter Fisher. The Ion has a 33" wingspan and was originally a free flight model powered by a Frog 80 diesel engine, however in this build it will be converted to 2 channel RC. The original design had elevons, used to give some reflex to the wing and they could be used to adjust the trim. In this build series these elevons will be servor controlled.
The plans for this build are available from Derick Scott at www.model-plans.co.uk/performance%20kits.htm

To make sure that distance from the sorsy is the REAL problem, you could loosen off the new tank's clamp, get some longer fuel line and hold the new tank back where the old tank is and repeat the experiment. Your PAW 55 ran so well, with nose up and down being completely ignored, thst makes me think its got great suction, which would cope with the original fuel tank location. So I wonder whether is actually an issue with the venting of the original tank. venting
Good solution, really nice. Now for the maiden, cant wait.
Looks like it was inspired by the control line Fierce Arrow by Bill Netzeband.
Neat solution Mark. I was wonderful if a bigger bore fuel pipe on the original tank have improved matters?
Hi Cliff, thanks for the comment, pleased you liked the solution, appreciate the suggestion 😀
Great solution, we all have a scrap box of " useful" bits. 😊
Yes indeed, thanks for the comment, pleased you liked it
Sangat rimbun sekali .kenapa tidak di bersihkan rumput di sekitar rel
Hello again, Mark. First, I must confess I have no experience with diesel engines whatsoever, none. All my engines are glow ignition. That being said, does your tank not need a vent? Seems to me it would. Also, Zap is not an epoxy. Or is it? Blue skies and fair winds!
Hi Richard, thanks for the comment, its appreciated. The tank did have a vent fitted. Yes, well spotted it was CA not epoxy - some times the mouth and brain become a little disconected! hahahaha
@@MarkRobinson555 It's okay, buddy. Sometimes my mouth works faster than my brain. Now, if I can just get motivated enough to get back on the Kadet Senior I started building a year ago...
At least you got over the problem. The old saying is. The man that never made a mistake never made anything. Love the tank.
Good morning Terry, thanks for the comment greatly appreciated 😀👍
Great job Mark, tilt up tilt down absolutely the correct way to check it, there are so many modelers that will not do this test why I do not know because is just as important to tilt down as it is to tilt up10 out of 10 for that Mark, 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the comedy, greatly appreciated, pleased you enjoyed the video 😀👍
Please turn the landing gear around on your beautiful Tomboy . It will then improve it's landing performance and C/G . Plus many thanks for your excellent videos .
Thanks for the comment, pleased you are enjoying the videos 😀
Good engines. I have several of different displacements. Probably one of the easiest starting diesels.
Yes, absolutely, great engines, thanks for the comment 😀
Well Don, but why didn't you fire up the engine? It could be a good test flight
Thanks for the comment, pleased you enjoyed the video. I went to that site for the long grass and softer landing, but its not a site I can fly from.
An Old Master. The clouds in the background (backsky?) are wonderful.
Thanks for the comment, pleased you liked it
Easycote is a hard no for me. Thank you for saving me a headache.
Pleased the video was useful
Thank you Mark! Great video and looks much easier than soaking in water and waiting for everything to settle back into shape. As far as people worrying about loss of strength You could coat the balsa with epoxy mixed with some denatured alcohol making it almost the viscosity of water. The wood soaks it up and presto, added strength. Cheers!
Thanks for the comment and the suggestion, greatly appreciated
Don't mention the fact that most clubs lost their field due to the loud noise from these things. Where's the muffler?
These lovely old engines on the whole did't have mufflers. This was flown at BMFA Buckminster where issues of noise is much more relaxed. Certainly there are many clubs around the UK where you could not fly it. Its great that we still fly these where we can
Another quality build and build series, attention to detail is superb, again, thank you for sharing Cheers James
Thank you very much, greatly appreciated. Pleased you are enjoying the videos 😀
Viaduct erected in 1900 by the the Pennsylvania and Maryland Bridge Construction Co. from components shipped to Burma from the U.S.
I can smell it from here!😊
Hahaha, great eh! 😜
Hi Mark, really nice too se this old sparkies power beautiful vintage models 🙂
Pleased you enjoyed it, thanks for the comment 😀
Awsome!
Pleased you like it 😀
1937...so originally it would have been freeflight?
Yes
Wonderful
Thank you! Cheers!
Looks and sounds great.
It certainly does, lovely to watch, and it flew well in what was quite a strong wind 😜
Modello iconico ,stupendo e che dire dei veterani alla riscossa? Wonderful
Grazie mille, apprezzo il commento
Really nice model. That's my kind of model. Well done that man.
Good morning Terry, thanks for the comment, really pleased you like it
I have flown in SAM competition in Australia alongside these sparkies and the noise was incredible! I have seen the OS strp on type muffler used successfully but most people choose not to bother. Sorry to sound negative, however I enjoy the models.
Next,time I want to go there 😊 I love it places ❤
Are you able to keep the screen open when doing this?
Yes
Made me dizzy just watching it
Hahahahah, its a crazy thing - thanks for the comment
hi mark i trimmed and flew my ionosphere at buckminster on thursday evening conditions were perfect after a lot of trimming ,finding the c of g and the correct engine rpm i had some good flights i have some rough footage on my phone will post it soon
Brilliant, really pleased to hear it went well, would be great to see the footage, thanks for letting me know, appreciated 😀
Would it have been possible to straighten the leading edge by steaming? or do you just jave to live with and adapt to bent balsa? Cheers James
Yes, I could have steamed it, but was ok to use, just not ideal. If it had been a model to last I would hva probably replaced it
If you get a chance try the same technique with Windex. It works really well I think it has something to do with the ammonia.
Superb ❤️
Thanks 🤗
What do I think? Another quality build and a quality build series, congratulations, although the Piper Cherokee and the Avanti Pattern so far are my favourites resulting in truly stunning, to my uneducated eyes, planes, just a preference and no criticism at all, I'd be really proud to produce something half the quality you produce especially when it comes to shaping. Cheers James
Thank you very much for the comment, really pleased you are enjoying the videos. Have you seen that second Avanti I built? I gave the first one to a friend when I left Thailand. The Avanti is certainly my favourite, great plans, enjoyable bild of a great design and flies lovely
Not got that far yet, looking forward to it
The train has come out of the bush! Wow! Ahh! It comes out! At this speed, you might not even need traffic lights. =草むらから列車が出てきてしまっている!うわっ!あっ!出てきた!この速度だと信号機はいらないかもしれない。
Mind blowing ❤
Sad end to an ARTF, at least you didn't sweat blood sweat and brains over this one. Still working my way through all your videos, that isn't your normal flying field, what happened?
Thanks for the comment, its appreciated. This is where I flew for a while after moving back to the UK, from Thailand, I then moved up north
Great video. Perhaps you can do a video about flying in Thailand. Are there clubs? Where are the fields? How difficult is it to get kits and supplies? I am thinking of heading to Bangkok in 5 years.
Thank you very much for the comment and suggestion, greatly appreciated
Kalau di Indonesia.. Pelayanan kereta api kayak gtu gak akan mau naik nya...
OMG there would have been no way that I would have crossed that viaduct.
Looking great! Can’t wait to see the maiden!
Thanks very much, really appreciate the comment
Exciting video to come me thinks
Hahahah, I hope so!! Thanks Cliff
Gotta love a good glide test!
So far so good, can't wait for the maiden 🙃
Thanks very much! Fingers crossed
Brilliant test glide. I watch a lot RC videos where the inevitable crash could have been avoided with a gentle toss into some tall weeds before applying full power. That being said, you demonstrated real bravery hurling that thing the way you did. In my experience, launches like that usually end in a stall and nose-dive from 10 feet. I will be looking for the maiden flight video!
Thanks for the comment, pleased you enjoyed the video
Test glide with no body on the sticks! brave Mark!👍👍
Thanks 👍
Sweeeeeeeet! 🙂
Thanks, pleased you like it
Looks great Mark. From the first test glide you could tell it’s going to be a winner!
Thank you very much, really appreciated
Well done Mark🤠👍
Thank you very much, appreciated 😀
Did you test the glides with a full tank of fuel?
No, should always trim and CG with an empty tank
